How do I pray, and what do I even say?

The short answer

Prayer is simply talking with God, honestly and in your own words. There's no special language or formula required. A helpful pattern is to praise, thank, ask, and listen, but the most important thing is to start. God is far more interested in your heart than in getting the words right.

Prayer is a conversation, not a performance

If you've ever felt like you don't know 'how' to pray, relax. Prayer isn't a script you have to recite or a skill you have to master. It's talking with a God who already loves you and already knows what's on your mind. You can pray out loud, silently, in the car, or lying awake at night.

A simple way to start

If you want a place to begin, this pattern has helped people for centuries:

  • Praise: tell God something you're grateful for about who He is.
  • Thanks: name a few specific things you're thankful for.
  • Ask: bring your real needs and the people you love.
  • Listen: sit quietly for a moment and pay attention.
  • Jesus also gave us a model in the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6) you can pray word for word.

What if it feels awkward?

It often does at first, and that's completely normal. Like any relationship, talking with God gets more natural with time. Start small, be honest, and keep going. You don't need impressive words; you need an open heart.

“This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name...'”Matthew 6:9

Common follow-up questions

Say what's actually on your mind, in your own words, as if you're talking to someone who loves you. You can thank God, ask for help, admit what you're struggling with, and pray for others. Honesty matters more than eloquence.

No. There's no required posture, location, or special language. You can pray out loud or silently, anywhere, anytime. Jesus actually warned against showy prayers and welcomed simple, sincere ones.

The Bible says yes, God hears and cares. You may not always get the answer you hoped for, but Scripture promises you are heard and loved every time you pray.
